STANDARD PRINCIPLES OF THE FAMILY
I am going to give in later writings some information relative to the farm family, the means whereby a living was earned, the house for a home, the size of the family, and the real happiness which was enjoyed by each of us.
However, at this time I wish to write about the standards and principles of the family. The discipline by our parents and the older members of the family was a natural process, accomplished by instilling in each member the value of being a very important part of the family unit. Our parents were firm and fair, however, the principles of integrity, honesty, character building, courage, the respect of others, the respect of property and a firm rock rib belief in a religious environment were the important rules for each member of this large and growing family.
There were many other values that were constantly upheld as a reminder to each of us that if we were to be productive to our country, of service to God and man, we should prepare ourselves through advanced education and skills in order to attain proficiency in our endeavors.
The wise counselling and encouragement throughout the years instilled a desire for each of us to advance our educational potential. The nine children not only received a high school diploma, but each entered college and became better prepared for the task of living a rich life, while making a living. Our parents believed that the teaching career was an all important factor in serving our fellow man. The educational careers were not only part of the immediate family, but was instilled in the future generations, and today we in the Houston family, spouse and the descendants have taught a composite of over 400 years.
We were taught and still believe that the success of any country must be accomplished through the educational system of that country. We as a family believed then, and are more convinced now, that a country is made strong through the family unit, who believes in and serves a living God. The family members who have been taught to respect the laws of man will respect and follow the laws of God.
